Google is on the look out for wrong doings.
There is nothing worse than creating a solid strategy just to see it fail. Below are some basic elements that you should be aware of during your SEO campaign.
- Duplicate Content
- Buying Links
- Incentivized Reviews
- Spammy Comments
- Misleading Your Visitors
- Keyword Stuffing
- Slow Or Badly Designed Website
- Sites Built Mainly With Flash or Javascript
- Neglecting Your Site
This happens when Google believes that your website is leveraging content that someone else created to benefit your website. This happens when some of the content that is on your website is present elsewhere online, it can even be a different website that your own. In a nutshell search engines want to give credit to the original authors and could even punish those who have taken the content without giving credit. The best rule of thumb here is to always create original content, yes do research when necessary, but don’t just copy and paste content, this is not a middle school history report after all.
Paid or incentivized links can definitely get you penalized by Google if they find out. Paid links are just as they sound and can easily be defined as a link that you give money, or something worth value to obtain. Search engines only want to value natural links that are acquired off the merit of your website. Many of these link farms have been denoted as spammy and have a low page rank. Yes we all want links as part of our SEO plan, but do yourself a favor and get backlinks by creating wonderful content that people want to share.
Going right along with the paid links, incentivized reviews are the same concept. It is in your best interest to stay away from any review that is unnatural and incentivized with some sort of value. An example of such a practice would be to promise a coupon for half off your next meal when you give us a review at the door. Reviews are very important for your local SEO and help customers get a better understanding of your brand. There is nothing wrong with requesting positive reviews, but pace yourself. Do not get a huge amount of reviews in a short period of time. Spread out your review campaign over several weeks to get the appearance of natural people showing their praise for your expert service.
Both onsite and offsite spammy comments can be very hazardous to your SEO efforts. This includes both comments left by you on a website pointing back to your website or comments left on your site pointing to other sites. When commenting on other websites we recommend this mentality. Only provide comments when relevant. Do not just post for the possible backlink. If you are doing it right you should be posting comments on topics that you are knowledgeable about on websites that have earned their high PageRank.
In essence this really has to do with your bounce rate more than anything. When people visit either your homepage or anyone of your many subpages, they have expectations. People know how the internet works, to the point where they may even have a subconscious visualization of what your website should look like and say. It is very important for your SEO campaign that the visitors that are on your website are getting the information that they want. Although it may be tempting to lead your visitors towards a desired action, make sure that you are being honest with how your write your content and display your information.
An oldie but a goldie. Keyword stuffing is simply having too many keywords for the amount of content, or having a keyword in every sentence. This makes for unnatural reading and is not easy for the viewers. Make sure you write content that flows well, and is natural to speak than you should be ok. Yes, it is probably a good idea to know what the top keywords are in your industry, but write your content for your visitors, not the search engine rankings.
User experience is a must for a great SEO campaign firing on all cylinders. Google wants to rank sites that are simple and easy to use for visitor experience. Websites need to be clean, fast and easy to use. This not only helps your seo but will also help your conversion rate. So be sure to optimize your code to run as smoothly as possible and all your images are optimized for the web. If you are not experienced with website editing you may have to hire a professional. A great standard is to make sure that your website is fast and mobile friendly, sometimes referred to as responsive.
It’s not so much that you will get penalized for having these kinds of websites, but more the fact that the bots Google uses to crawl the web can’t read Flash and Javascript code. So, if the bots can’t read your website, you must have other pages that Google can read.
Just about the worst thing you can do for your website is to neglect it. You go through all the trouble of having a website made and then never touch it? You will never reap the benefits of a website if this is the case. A stale and stagnate website will slowly sink into the SERPs endless depths. Only websites that keep offering refreshing content and changing will rank high. The best thing you can do for your website is to attach a blog to it and update it consistently, maybe even rewriting content on your pages once in a blue moon. Just remember that even though your website is ranking well today, that may not be the case if your do not maintain those rankings.
A website that ranks well is one that has great search engine optimization and offers something new and useful to its visitors on a consistent basis. However, no matter how much you may be doing right, if you do one major thing wrong, you may plummet in rankings. This is not meant to scare you away from an optimization campaign. It is meant to inform you on bad tactics to watch out for when choosing an SEO company or considering doing it yourself.
